  • Description

Cidade do Cabo, a small town 18 miles (30 kms) south of Recife in Brazil is the seat of operations for Catholic priest Padre Melo, who has helped put the area's once dying sugar cane industry back on its feet.

It is eight years since Padre Melo established the Workers Co-operative which now runs the sugar cane plantations in and around Cidade Do Cabo. His latest achievement is the take-over of Usinas Salgado, the largest sugar factory in the area. Padre Melo took over the factory when it stopped work last month due to financial difficulties. The Usinas Salgado factory and its plantations cover an area of more than 75 square miles (205 sq. kms.).

The miles of sugar cane plantations run by the Workers Co-operative are administered by a board headed by Padre Melo, but the Padre's work is not restricted to the office.

Each day the Padre spends time in the sugar can fields talking to the workers and is always ready to listen to their views on ways of improving the Co-operative.

Padre Melo has met with strong support for his revolutionary Workers Co-operative amongst all workers in the north-eastern plantations of Brazil.

But, it is only in recent months that the Padre's work has come tot he attention of the Brazilian Government who are now providing assistance and encouraging the Workers Co-operative.
