  • Description

AT LEAST FIFTY PEOPLE DIED EARLY TODAY WHEN A GIANT JET AIRLINER APPROACHING LONDON'S GATWICK AIRPORT CRASHED INTO A COUNTRY HOUSE AND BURST INTO FLAMES. MANY OF THE PASSENGERS ABOARD THE ARIANA AFGHAN AIRWAYS BOEING 727 WERE INDIANS RETURNING TO BRITAIN AFTER SPENDING CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS AT HOME. THE JET CARRIED A CREW OF NINE.

THREE OCCUPANTS OF THE HOUSE, WHICH STOOD ABOUT A MILE (3 KMS) FROM THE AIRPORT, WERE AMONG THE MISSING, BUT A BABY IN THE HOUSE SURVIVED. THIRTEEN OTHER PEOPLE WERE INJURED IN THE CRASH, MOST OF THEM CRITICALLY.

IT WAS BITTERLY COLD AND FOGGY AS THE BOEING - WHICH HAD FLOWN FROM AMRITSAR, INDIA, BY WAY OF LAHORE, KABUL, BEIRUT, ISTANBUL AND FRANKFURT -- CAME IN TO APPROACH THE AIRPORT.

GATWICK, 25 MILES (40 KMS) FROM LONDON, HAD BEEN SHUT DUE TO FOG FOR SEVERAL HOURS AND THE BOEING HAD BEEN THE FIRST AIRLINER SCHEDULED TO LAND SINCE THE SHUT-DOWN. IT WAS NOT KNOWN WHETHER THE PILOT INTENDED TO LAND, OR MERELY TO LOOK AT APPROACH CONDITIONS, BUT CRASH INVESTIGATORS SAID LATER TODAY THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS EXACTLY ON COURSE AND HAD BEEN IN CONTACT WITH THE AIRPORT CONTROL UNTIL TWO OR THREE MINUTES BEFORE THE CRASH.

THREE OF THE CREW - THE PILOT, THE FIRST OFFICER AND THE FLIGHT ENGINEER - ARE BELIEVED TO BE AMONG THE SURVIVORS.
