Background: PRESIDENT SANGOULE LAMIZANA OF UPPER VOLTA PRESIDED AT COLOURFUL NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATIONS IN THE CAPITAL, OUAGADOUGOU, LAST MONDAY (DECEMBER 11). THE PRESIDENT REVIEWED A PARADE AT AVENUE INDEPENDENCE COMPRISING MASSED BANDS, DETACHMENTS FROM THE ARMED FORCES, CIVILIANS AND A PROCESSION OF FLOATS.

IN A BROADCAST TO MARK NATIONAL DAY, THE PRESIDENT CALLED ON ALL AFRICAN STATES TO FORGET INDIVIDUAL INTERESTS AND WORK FOR THE SUCCESS OF REGIONAL AREAS.

THE PRESIDENT STATED: "WE HOPE A START WILL BE MADE, CAUTIOUSLY PERHAPS BUT WITH A FIRM WILL, ON THE ROAD TO ECONOMIC INTEGRATION, TOWARDS A FORMATION OF A POWERFUL WHOLE IN WHICH LARGE SCALE PRODUCTIVE ACTIVITIES WILL BE HARMONISED, COMPLIMENTARY AND NOT IN COMPETITION." PRESIDENT LAMIZANA SAID AFRICANS SHOULD FIRST UNITE AMONG THEMSELVES TO SAVE AFRICA AND THEN WITH OTHER PEOPLES "TO SAVE THE WORLD" HE SAID THAT 1967 WAS A DECISIVE YEAR FOR THE UPPER VOLTA'S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND THE PEOPLE COULD REGARD THE FUTURE WITH CONFIDENCE.
