  • Description

Several hundred left-wing demonstrators marched in a noisy procession to the Calcutta building of the All-India Radio on Saturday (22 August) in protest against what they regard as its propaganda against the Marxist Communists, and the wave of strikes in West Bengal.

Apart from the continuing strike in the steel-making town of Durgapur, State Government circles have taken serious note of the Government Employees' proposed three-day strike from August 26; a three-day strike in the tramway, and another in the fire services from August 31.

The Marxist Communist Party of India (CPI (M) has discussed a programme of agitation on various issues during the rest of the month, which includes a massive gherao (sealing off) of the central Dalhousie Square area in Calcutta on August 31st.

West Bengal, the strong-hold of India's Maoist revolutionaries, has been ruled by the central government in New Delhi since a Marxist-led Government collapsed last March.

Mrs. Indira Gandhi said in Calcutta on August 22 that the situation in West Bengal had not improved sufficiently for a mid-term poll to elect a new Government.

The Marxist Communists want such a mid-term poll, and they are also pressing for the release of the Marxists arrested since the West Bengal Government collapsed.
