    Ethiopia was among the nations which celebrated May Day for the first time this year, following the overthrow of Emperor Haile Selassie.

    There was rejoicing over the international workers holiday in many parts of the country, but the longest and most colourful parade was is the capital, Addis Ababa.

    Thousands of workers form industry and agriculture paraded through the streets before officials, and were addressed by Brig.-Gen. Teferi Bante, Chairman of the Provisional Military Administrative Council.

    In his speech, Brig.-Gen. Teferi applauded May Day, and emphasised its importance to the workers of the world.

    The First Vice President of the Confederation of Ethiopian Labour Unions, Ato Alem Abdi, also addressed the rally, and pledged support for, and solidarity with, the decisions taken by the Provisional Military Government.
