  • Description

Japanese tourists are being educated in the ways of the West before leaving their home towns for European holidays. Officially-sanctioned programmes have been started to teach tourists how to avoid social blunders which have, in the past, made the Japanese unwelcome in foreign countries.

Parties of tourists are briefed by an airline representative on such subjects as how to eat abroad, how to make polite conversation with foreigners and how to behave when "hitting the town".

The Japanese have only two weeks' holiday a year and those who come to Europe generally do so in groups and rarely move around without a guide. They visit all the main cities and like to cram as much sightseeing as possible into their time abroad.

As few of them speak English or any other foreign language, contact with local people is minimal. Japanese tourists are also enthusiastic photo-graphers - most of them would rather take pictures than listen to their guide.
