The laser is a result of research and development work in two Raytheon groups, the Research Division and the Laser Advanced Development Center in Waltham, Mass.
The unit, which is known as Model LG16, is a highly efficient laser using a mixture of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and helium as the laser material. It is generally believed to have the highest continuous output -- more than 500 watts -- of any commercially available laser.
Lasers are instruments that produce an extremely narrow beam of concentrated light energy. They are presently being used as research tools in such applications as radar, ranging, cutting, welding, and communications.
Early research at Raytheon in the use of carbon dioxide as a laser medium was conducted by Dr. David Whitehouse of the laser group in the company's Research Division. Product development of the LG16 was under the direction of James Leone with Dr. Shen Y. Shey as project engineer at Raytheon's Laser Advanced Development Center.
Research work on high power carbon dioxide lasers is being partially supported under a 10-month-long contract from the U.S. Army Missile Command. Research and Development Directorate, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.
