  • Description

THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT GRANTED 30 NORTH VIETNAMESE PRISONERS THEIR FREEDOM ON FRIDAY (3 FEB) AS PART OF ITS OFFICIAL COMMEMORATION OF THE COMING LUNAR NEW YEAR. BUT TWO OF THEM DECIDED NOT TO GO HOME.

THE PRISONERS WERE DRIVEN TO THE HIEN LUONG BRIDGE, WHICH SPANS THE BEN HAI RIVER -- A NATURAL BOUNDARY THAT DIVIDES THE TWO VIETNAMS. THERE A SHORT CEREMONY TOOK PLACE. PRESENT WERE GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, NEIGHBOURING VILLAGERS, AND US MILITARY OFFICERS. LOUDSPEAKERS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE RIVER BLARED OUT SLOGANS.

TEN OF THE TWENTY-EIGHT PRISONERS HOBBLED ACROSS THE BRIDGE ON CRUTCHES; SOME OF THEM WERE MISSING LIMBS. DESPITE THE RAIN AND COLD WEATHER THEY TOOK OFF THEIR SOUTH VIETNAMESE CLOTHES AND THREW THEM IN THE RIVER AS THEY CROSSED THE BRIDGE.
