  • Description

Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia had an hour-long discussion with France's president Pompidou on thursday (22 June) on the future of French territories beside the Red Sea.

The meeting took place at the Elysee Place. Emperor Haile Selassie will also have talks with the French Foreign Minister, M. Giscard D'Estaing and the Secretary of State M. Yvon Bourges before he flies home after the weekend.

The Ethiopian monarch is concerned at what will happen to the French territory known as the Affairs and the Issas should France decide to abandon them. Ethiopia is particularly anxious that the port of Djibouti should remain in what the Emperor describes as "friendly hands". Djibouti is a major outlet for Ethiopian trade.

Thursday's meeting was the second time that Emperor Haile Selassie has discussed the territory with President Pompidou. After the first meeting two years ago the Emperor said he hoped France would eventually leave Djibouti to Ethiopia - in accordance with a former treaty between the two countries.
