  • Description

A feature film with an anti-apartheid theme -- "The Wilby Conspiracy" -- is being filmed in Kenya starring the black American actor, Sidney Poitier and the English actor Michael Caine.

The story is set in South Africa, but most of the filming is being done in Kenya because the implications of the story condemn systems of government like South African apartheid which create second-class citizenship.

Poitier plays a political prisoner who escapes and joins up with Caine and Prunella Gee - a new-comer to films - in a series of adventures involving diamonds.

The South African Government tricks them into trying to capture Wilby -- played by the Kenyan actor Joe de Graaf -- who is the leader of a nationalist political party.

Some of the action is being filmed at Nanyuki, about 200 miles (320 kms) north of Nairobi. The countryside there is renowned for its beauty and wild life. The interiors are to be shot in Nairobi and at the Pinewood Studios in England.

The director of the film is Ralph Nelson, who directed Poitier's Academy-award-winning performance in "Lillies of the Field".
