  • Description

The United States Secretary of State Mr William Rogers, who arrived in Israel from Cairo today (Thursday May 6) on the last stage of his five-nation Middle-East tour, held a series of talks with Israeli leaders on the prospects of peace in the area. But as students in the Tel Aviv demonstrated against Mr Rogers outside the US Embassy, Deputy Premier Yigal Allon said that the exchange of views between Israel and the Us might lead to a "fierce argument". And Premier Mrs Golda Meir also warned, only hours before Mr Rogers' arrival on his two-day tour, that Israel was prepared to say "No" to its friends as well as its enemies.

At Tel Aviv airport on his arrival, Mr Rogers called for a greater Israeli effort in peace moves with the Arabs, but he also emphasised America's friendship and concern for Israel. American policy, however, was based on the 1967 U.N. Security Council resolution for an Israeli withdrawal from occupied Arab territory, he said. Mr Rogers' immediate plans for the Middle East include an interim agreement for re-opening of the Suez Canal prior to long-term peace plans.
