  • Description

In 1903 the aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright achieved the first successful powered and controlled flight by an aircraft. On Monday (8 March 1971) a replica of the historic aircraft made a very similar flight, skimming a few feet over the ground for about 200 feet, about the same distance as Orville Wright managed. The replica was made fora film on educational television. The replica was powered by a motor-cycle engine much more powerful than that used in the original flight. Even so, its pilot and builder, Jack Lambie, had difficulty in taking wing. Monday's flight was made a few miles from kittyhawk, scene of the original success nearly 68 years ago.
