  • Description

For the second time in less than a month, the United Nations Security Council, on Friday (21 July), called on Israel to release six Syrian and Lebanese officers abducted by an Israeli patrol, which penetrated into Lebanese territory on 21 June.

In a resolution approved on Friday, the 15-nation council also deplored the fact that Israel had so far given no effect to the Council's previous call, on 26 June, for the return of the officers.

The United States abstained in the voting, but all the other members voted in favour of the resolution, which was jointly sponsored by Guinea, India, Somalia, Sudan and Yugoslavia.

Israel did not take part in the new debate, in protest against the Council's refusal to discus in parallel Israel's proposals for a mutual exchange of prisoners of war on both sides in the Middle East conflict.

On Thursday (20 July) Somalia's Ambassador, Abdulrahim Abby Farah, introduced the resolution to the Security Council.
