The Vice President of Cuba Dr. Carlos Raphael Rodriguez has begun a three day official visit to Portugal.
SYNOPSIS: He began his visit with a call on the President of Portugal Antonio Ramalho Eanes at the Presidential palace. President Eanes was expected to discuss such topics as the situation in Angola and Mozambique. It was in the former Portuguese colony of Angola that Cuban mercenaries fought alongside anti-Government dissidents. Dr. Rodriguez planned to have talks with the Prime Minister Carlos Mota Pinto and other Revolutionary Council members.
There was also an exchange of gifts at the meeting. Dr. Rodriguez is the most senior Cuban Government official to visit Lisbon since the 1974 revolution in Portugal which overthrew nearly half a century of right wing dictatorship.
Dr. Rodriguez is responsible for Cuban affairs. He was invited by the Military Council of the Revolution, Portugal's Constitutional watchdog Committee which includes officers who staged the coup.
