    MEDICAL HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE IN THE MIDDLE EAST THIS WEEK BY A HEART OPERATION PERFORMED AT THE MADI MILITARY HOSPITAL IN EGYPT YESTERDAY (TUESDAY).

    THE OPERATION WAS PERFORMED BY DOCTOR ABDUL KABER MANSOUR, A LEADING EGYPTIAN SURGEON. THE PATIENT IS MRS. LILA ABDUL MALAK, AGED 60, MOTHER OF THREE.

    MRS. ABDUL MALAK RECEIVED AN ELECTRIC DEVICE, KNOWN AS A 'PACER', DESIGNED TO SPEED UP HER HEART BEAT, WHICH WAS SLOW. HER HEARTBEAT RATE WAS THIRTY BEATS A SECOND COMPARED WITH THE NORMAL RATE OF ABOUT EIGHTY BEATS A MINUTE. THE DEVICE PROVIDES THE HEART WITH A PERMANENT STIMULUS.

    THE BATTERY PACK IS PLACED UNDER THE LEFT ARM. WIRES RUN FROM THE BATTERY TO THE HEART, GIVING THE HEART A SLIGHT SHOCK AT TIMES WHEN IT SHOULD BEAT.

    YESTERDAY'S OPERATION IS BELIEVED TO BE THE FIRST OF ITS TYPE EVER CONDUCTED IN EGYPT.
