  • Description

The Baghdad Pact Ministerial Committee met for its sixth session, Jan 26, in Karachi. The British Minister of Defence and leader of the UK delegation, Mr. Duncan Sandys, said the Iraqi revolt of last summer had been the Pact's severest test. The momentous London meeting last summer demonstrated to the world not only that the alliance was unshaken but that the crisis had emphasized its importance and had strengthened the common determination to work even more closely together.

The Pact, he pointed out, was not only a military alliance for defence. It was also a channel for joint co-operation in promoting joint economic well-being of the region and for raising the living standards of its people.

A communique issued by the Military Committee, which had met earlier, stated that live sea and air exercises are to be staged during 1959.

Mr. Loy Henderson, head of the USA observer delegation - the USA is not a member country of the Pact - said that the object of International Communism remained unchanged - world domination. The free nations had recognized that survival required concrete measures to meet this threat.

During the two and a half days remaining, the Council will review the world situation.
