    Background: DUSSELDORF, WEST GERMANY

Police shot and wounded a man on July 5 after storming a bank in Dusseldorf where at least nine people had been held hostage by a gunman. The gunman had entered the Stadtsparkasse Bank in the city centre during the lunch four. After the alarm was raised police surrounded the building, and sealed off the surrounding area. Minutes later armed officers attempted to enter the bank, but were forced to withdraw when the gunman fired several shots. The gunman then threatened to blow up the building unless he was paid a ransom of more than 3.5 million US dollars. Several hours later, after one of the hostages was freed, police suddenly stormed the building. They blew out the front door and a brief gun-battle followed. The wounded man was later carried from the bank on a stretcher and taken to hospital. He was understood to be a 32-year-old Moroccan who lived in Cologne. None of the hostages, who included several bank employees, was hurt during the incident.
