  • Description

The French cruiser "Joan of Arc", a training ship for officer-cadets of the French navy, sailed into Casablanca harbour on Tuesday making the first official visit by a French naval vessel since Moroccan Independence in 1956.

Morocco became independent in 1956 from both Spain and France, and began a long struggle under King Mohammed V and his son King Hassan II to rid the country of the foreign military presence. The Moroccan army was founded in 1956, are air force in 1959, and a navy in 1960.

The "Joan of Arc"'s visit with her companion-vessel in the French training squadron, the escort "Victor-Schoelcher", sets the seal on the new cordiality in relations between the two countries. The cruiser includes six Moroccan officer-cadets among its complement.
