Background: In Rome on Saturday (27 September) ten thousand people demonstrated against the execution of five guerrillas in Spain by marching through the city. Before the Italy-Finland European Soccer Championship match the crowd observed two minutes silence for the dead. After the game, hundreds of fans staged a separate - and entirely unconnected protest of their own -- against the poor quality of the game which ended in a goaless draw.
During the anti-Franco march several buses were damaged by the demonstrators. Tension was high in the city with a combination of sixty thousand football fans and the angry protesters against the Spanish executions milling through the streets.
Italy along with several other European countries has recalled its ambassador. Pope Paul has condemned the deaths and Spain has retaliated by recalling its ambassador from Rome. Its taken similar acting elsewhere in Europe.
The players stood to attention with the huge scoreboard above the stadium printing out the request to the crowd to show respect for those executed.
Once play started, it was an indifferent game for both sides. The teams were playing in group five to quality for quarter-final placing in the championship.
With the scoreboard at the final whistle showing a goaless draw, spectators began pouring onto the pitch to protest at the poor quality of the game. As more and more fans joined them, riot police moved in and charged the terraces driving some of the spectators back.
