  • Description

In the People's Republic of Benin, the political commissar of the Atlantic region, M. Andre Atchade, called a political rally on tuesday (14 December) to alert the public to the real reasons for the present maize shortage.

SYNOPSIS: The rally took place int eh sports stadium of the capital, Cotonou. Science becoming independent as Dahomey in August 1960, Benin has experienced six bloodless coups with the country's military always playing a decisive role. Lieutenant Colonel Kerekou who came to power in 1972 set up a Military Council of the revolution to govern the country and created a Marxist ruling Party, the Benin People's Revolutionary Party.

Several members of the Party's Central Committee were at the rally to hear Captain Atchade tell the crowd that the maize shortage was a sham caused by corrupt tradesmen and their accomplices, who hoped to make a profit by stockpiling maize and selling it later at an inflated price. Captain Atchade said that about 37,000 hectares of maize were grown in the province last year, but since the start of the government's production campaign, nearly 43,000 hectares of maize were now under cultivation.

Captain Atchade asked the crowd to redouble their vigilance so the people could outwit their class enemies, the corrupt tradesmen and their accomplices.
