Background: INTRODUCTION: Tennis, and in the third round of the Stella Artois championship in London on Thursday (11 June) the holder of the men's singles title, John McEnroe, had an easy win over fellow American Bill Scanlon. McEnroe beat Scanlon, who was seeded ninth, 6-3, 6-2. But another American, Roscoe Tanner -- seeded second -- was put out of the competition by the number eleven seed, Kevin Curren of South Africa.

SYNOPSIS: Last year McEnroe, serving here, took the title by beating Australia's Kim Warwick 6-3, 6-1.

This time McEnroe's third round match against Bill Scanlon followed a similar pattern.

In fact in the second set Scanlon took one more game than last year's finalist, Warwick. But he was still struggling against McEnroe.

This serve gained the match for McEnroe, and brought him a step nearer another title.

South Africa's Kevin Curren, serving to Roscoe Tanner, was a surprise winner. Last year he was unseeded and lost in the second round to American Brian Gottfried.

The first set went to a tie-break, which Tanner won 7-6. Then Curren fought back.

After another tie-break Curren took the second set 7-6. That left the score one set all, and Curren leading five-four in the third set. Then Tanner found himself 40-love down.

In the end Curren won the match with an ace -- the kind of serve which has always been a speciality of Roscoe Tanner. This time he was on the receiving end.
