  • Description

British Petroleum announced in London on Thursday (16 December) a 160 million sterling programme to develop its Forties Field oil discovery in the North Sea, with first deliveries being piped ashore in Scotland by late 1975.

The programme includes an initial production of some 250,000 barrels a day -- about 12 1/2 per cent of the United Kingdom's present total consumption of oil -- by late 1975. Eventual production, after installation of further facilities, is expected to rise to 400,000 barrels a day, making the field one of the most productive in the world.

SYNOPSIS: British Petroleum has announced a 160-million-pound development programme for its North Sea Forties Field oil discovery. The programme includes an initial production of some 250,000 barrels a day -- about 12-and-a-half-per cent of the United Kingdom's total present consumption of oil -- by late 1975.

BP has estimated that eventual production, after the installation of further facilities, is expected to rise to 400,000 barrels a day -- that would make the Forties Field one of the most productive in the world. The new facilities are expected to include a 36-inch pipeline, the biggest yet planned in the world.

Plans are also in hand to build two production platforms. Each will weigh about 400,000 tons and be capable of winds of 130 miles-an-hour and waves 94 feet high.
