MEMBERS OF THE FIRST AUSTRALIAN FIELD HOSPITAL AT VUNG TAU, SOUTH VIETNAM, LAST WEEK STAGED A CHRISTMAS PARTY FOR 400 SOUTH VIETNAMESE CHILDREN AT THE NAM BINH REFUGEE CAMP IN PHUOC TUY PROVINCE. SANTA CLAUS WAS PLAYED BY CORPORAL ROY SPRAKE OF SALISBURY, QUEENSLAND. MANY CHILDREN WERE ORPHANS.

THE CHILDREN RANGED FROM BABIES TO 13-YEAR-OLDS. A TINY RIOT ERUPTED WHEN SANTA CLAUS AND HIS BAND OF SOLDIERS ARRIVED TO HAND OUT ICE-CREAM, SWEETS AND GIFTS TO THE CHILDREN.

THE NUNS OF THE HAMLET SCHOOL AND THE PARISH PRIEST ALSO RECEIVED A SHARE OF THE GOODS, WHICH WERE DELIVERED ON AN ARMY TRAILER.

SOME CHILDREN, AGED ABOUT FOUR AND FIVE, WERE SEEN SPOON-FEEDING THEIR YOUNGER BROTHERS AND SISTERS. OTHERS, SEEMINGLY BEWILDERED, TOOK THEIR UNOPENED BAGS OF SWEETS TO A QUIETER EATING PLACE.

THE HOSPITAL STAFF, PARENTS OR NUNS STEPPED IN TO CONSOLE SOME OF THE YOUNGSTERS WHO WERE CAUGHT IN THE RUSH AND EMERGED WITH MINOR BRUISES AND CUTS.

CLOTHING WAS ALSO HANDED OUT TO THE CHILDREN.
