HERR ADOLF VON THADDEN, THE JUBILANT DEPUTY LEADER OF THE DEMOCRAT PARTY, SPOKE ON THE RESULTS WHEN IT WAS CLEAR THAT HIS PARTY HAD GAINED SEVERAL SEATS.

    IT WAS THE SECOND SHOCK ELECTION SUCCESS THIS MONTH FOR THE TWO-YEAR-OLD PARTY WHICH TWO WEEKS AGO WON EIGHT SEATS IN THE HESSE STATE ELECTIONS.

    THE BAVARIAN VOTE WAS ALSO SIGNIFICANT FOR THE PERSONAL TRIUMPH OF FORMER DEFENCE MINISTER, FRANZ-JOSEPH STRAUSS AND HIS CHRISTIAN SOCIAL UNION, THE UNION, BAVARIAN ALLY OF THE RULLING FEDERAL CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS, DEFIED FORECASTS BY WINNING 110 SEATS AND STRENGTHENING ITS ABSOLUTE MAJORITY IN THE LANDTAG (STATE ASSEMBLY).
