  • Description

From the converted former German lightship "Veronica", anchored six miles off the Dutch coast at Noordwijk, commercial radio entertainment programmes are being broadcast in defiance of the Netherlands authorities.

The "Veronica" is owned by a company called Vron (Free Broadcast Service Netherlands) whose managing director is a dealer in wireless and television sets, Mr. H. Oswald. The company was established last November, with a capital of about GBP10,000, with the aim of establishing a commercial radio station with plans for television services. Mr. Oswald and his colleagues applied for a transmitting licence and announced that if it was refused they would operate from a ship outside Dutch territorial waters.

Mr. Oswald has received no decision on his application but broadcasting equipment owned by the company has twice been seized by Dutch authorities under the Netherlands Telegraph and Telephone Act.

The "Veronica" herself was seized in the west German harbour of Emden recently, at the request of the Netherlands vice-consul there, but was released after Mr. Oswald protested that she was of Panamanian registry and owned by a South American firm of which he was the representative.

Complaints have been made that the "Veronica's" broadcasts have interfered with marine wireless communications.

At present the power of the "Veronica's" transmitter is 1 kilowatt, but it is intended to raise the power to 20 kilowatts.
