Background: As West Berlin prepared to host its first major international sporting event since the controversial pre-war "Hitler Olympics", politics again went hand in hand with sport in to the famous Olympic Stadium. For their first game in the 1974 World Cup competition, host nation Westv Germany played the national team of Chilo - an event that brought police and demonstrators out in force.

While police filled the area around the magnificent stadium, one of the finest sports venues in the world, students were already out on the streets of Berlin handing out leaflets denouncing the Chilean Military regime and comparing the use of the Santiago Stadium for the detention of Aliunde suspects with the use of the Berlin stadium for the game with Chile. But neither Police or demonstrators could deter the West German football fans who filled the stadium for the game.

After the heavy rain that marred the opening game in Frankfurt between Brazil and Yugoslavia, the sun warmed the Berlin soone and had the fans out on the streets from the early morning for this sell out game.

One of the favorites for the 1974 tournament, West Germany have a long and successful record in the World Cup competition and many are tipping them to take the title from the present holders, Brazil.

But the presence of Chile provides the major problem for the city authorities. Tomorrow, June, 15, there is to be a protest march through the streets of the City and a major policital turn out by the left is expected on June 18 when Chile clash with East Germany is Berlin. On the same day, left wing supporters will open blood donor centers in the city to gather plasma for Chile.
