TRANSCRIPT: "This is a model of an eye. Inside, the eye acts something like a camera. You have a lens which acts to focus light on the back of the eye and if this lens in front gets cloudy, that's a cataract. The normal way of treating this is to remove the cloudy lens, take it out of the eye by surgery. But then the power that is lost has to be replaced with either thick glasses or contact lenses. But there's another way to put this power back into the eye. That's by using a tiny plastic implant. Dr. Dennis Shepherd explains the procedure."

DR. SHEPHERD: "You see the cataract -- the cloudy lens inside the eye -- is being removed. Now you see here placed on the front of the eye, the cornea, the clear window portion of the eye, you see the (indistinct) lens with its loops. Now you see the front of the eye being elevated and the lens being slid into the eye, being implanted. It's being manoeuvred into position in the pupil. Now it's implanted and now the eye is closed."

Background: Cataracts -- the clouding of a lens in the eye -- have been a major cause of blindness and in the past surgery was needed to remove the affected lens. But this meant the patient had to wear heavy glasses or contact lenses to make up for the lost lens tissue.

Now, researchers in the United States have come up with a possible alternative.

It involves removing the cloudy layer and then implanting a tiny plastic lens in the cornea or clear portion of the eye. This implant removes the need for any external lens after the operation is finished.
