Background: New York Cosmos have won the first Transatlantic Cup. Cosmos confronted the 1979 North American Soccer League champions Vancouver White Caps on their home ground, the Giants Stadium in New Rutherford on Monday (26 May). Cosmos only needed a draw to be sure of winning the cup, and a one-one draw was all they managed. Former Italian international Giorgio Chinaglia scored the goal that mattered, the equaliser in the second half, which gave Cosmos the cup.

SYNOPSIS: Cosmos was playing in all-white from left to right, starting off a first half which lacked the flair soccer fans were used to from the world-class players the New York team had signed up.

A capacity crowd supported the home team, who successfully warded off the White Caps first serious attack, a free-kick from just outside the penalty area.

At the other end of the field, former West German captain Franz Beckenbauer instigated the move which nearly gave Cosmos the lead. A superb pass from Julio Cesar Romero, but Cosmos misses the chance and the White Caps clear.

The first half produced few thrills, and like the White Caps attacking here, neither team seemed to score, and their goal keepers were rarely more severely tested than Vancouver's Bruce Grobbelaar after this throw-in.

At half time the cheerleaders had no goals to cheer, but Cosmos only needed a draw to win the cup. However that dream suddenly became remote at the beginning of the second half, when Vancouver's Ray Hankin exploited a Cosmos Defensive mistake and scored from ten metres (yards) out.

But Cosmos did not give up, a pass from Johan Neeskens to Carlos Alberto, and Vancouver clears the header to give Cosmos a corner.

The corner precipitated Cosmos's equaliser. Jeff Durgan lobs the ball back in front of goal, and Giorgio Chinaglia finally finds the hole in the confusion for the one-all.

The remaining minutes did not change the score, so with the one-all draw, New York Cosmos become the first winners of the Transatlantic Challenge Cup.
