Background: The unsuccessful all-Indian Everest expedition - beaten by bad weather conditions - returned to New Delhi June 20 with the thermometer reading 112 degrees in the shade.

Led by Brigadier Gyan Singh, the thirteen-man climbing team - supported by six non-climbers and many Sherpa porters - was thwarted by blinding snow and strong winds when only 700-ft. from the peak May 26.

Mount Everest was first conquered by a British-led expedition on May 29, 1953. It was on a second attempt that Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay achieved the peak.

A Chinese team - climbing from the other side - claims to have conquered Everest.
