Background: Visnews filmed Apl 16-17 4,000 men of the new Japanese army during their 5-day manoeuvres with tanks and anti-aircraft guns on the slopes of famous Mount Fuji.
The units taking part came from the districts of Nerima, Takada, Matsumoto, Shinmachi, Utsunomiya, Yokohama. They are part of the "Ground Forces of the Japanese Self-Defense Force", democratic Japan's substitute for the Imperial Japanese Army of World War II.
Interest in these manoeuvres is heightened by the recently announced 'scheduled withdrawal' during the next 12 months of some of the American ground troops at present based in Japan.
Award were presented to the unit which scored most points during the manoeuvres.
