    GHANA AND NIGERIA HAVE AGREED TO OPERATE JOINT SHIPPING SERVICES TO EUROPE, AMERICA AND WEST AFRICA. THIS PROMOTES ECONOMIC ASSOCIATION BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES AND GIVES A BASIS FOR A WEST AFRICAN ECONOMIC ASSOCIATION.

    THIS UNION FOLLOWS A MEETING BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES SHIPPING COMPANIES, THE GHANA BLACK STAR LINE AND THE NIGERIAN SHIPPING LINE. DELEGATES FROM THE SHIPPING LINES MET IN LAGOS ON MONDAY FOR THE CONFERENCE WHICH LASTED TWO DAYS, AND A FURTHER MEETING WILL BE HELD IN GHANA TO FINALISE DECISIONS. THE NIGERIAN FEDERAL COMMISSIONER FOR TRANSPORT, MR JOSEPH TARKA, SAID THE TWO COUNTRIES SHOULD CO-OPERATED IN VARIOUS ECONOMIC FIELDS AND THE SHIPPING LINES MERGER WOULD PROTECT BOTH COUNTRIES AGAINST FOREIGN COMPETITION.
