  • Description

Five 'volunteers of the Irish Republican Army' lost their lives when their cottage headquarters and arsenal was destroyed by an explosion on Monday (Nov 12).

The cottage stood near the Eire border at Edentubber, County Louth. It was tenanted by a Michael Watters, aged 54, one of the victims of the explosion.

The explosion occurred, it is believed, when a land-mine was being carried from the cottage. It was of such force that one of the bodies was hurled 75 yards into a field and the windows of houses within a radius of 1 1/2 mile were shattered.

Outside the cottage was found a bicycle to which was strapped a sub-machine gun and among the wreckage were found other loaded sub-machine guns, ten loaded machine gun magazines and several hundred rounds of ammunition. Police think that two men, who were outside the house when the explosion occurred, escaped.

A document delivered to Dublin newspapers gave the identity of the four men killed. It was signed D. MacDairmada, Adjutant-General, It said "With regard Ravensdale explosion we regretfully announce that the following four volunteer of the IRA lost their lives: Paul Smith, aged 19 of Bessbrook Co. Armagh, Oliver Craven aged 19 of Newry CO. Down, George Keegan of New Street, Ensiscothy and Patrick Parle aged 27 of Wexford Town."
