IN THE SOUTHWEST, WORK CREWS HAVE ALREADY STARTED ON THIS YEAR'S WHEAT HARVEST, INCLUDING THE SURPLUS. A DIRECT REPORT FROM OKLAHOMA CITY:
OKLAHOMA'S WHEAT HARVEST GOT OFF TO A RAGGED START THIS YEAR. HEAVY RAINS DELAYED THE FIRST CUTTING, AND THUNDER SHOWERS HAVE PLAGUED THE HARVESTERS EVER SINCE THE COMBINES FINALLY STARTED ROLLING NORTHWARD.

THROUGH THE SEA OF GRAIN THAT STRETCHES FROM THE SOUTHWEST TO CANADA. THIS YEAR'S CROP IN OKLAHOMA IS GOING TO BE A GOOD ONE ... ABOUT 75 TO 80-MILLION BUSHELS ... ABOVE THE 60-MILLION BUSHEL AVERAGE, BUT FAR BELOW LAST YEAR'S RECORD HARVEST OF 115-MILLION BUSHELS.

AN ARMY OF WORKERS IS NEEDED TO GET 80-MILLION BUSHELS OF GRAIN FROM THE FIELDS INTO THE ELEVATORS. IT'S A.....

....MODERN ARMY, MOBILIZED INTO TEAMS OF COMBINES.....

....AND TRUCKS THAT CAN BORE THROUGH THE BIGGEST FIELDS IN A FEW DAYS. THE ARMY IS LED BY BUSINESSMEN IN WORK CLOTHES ... MANY OFF WHOM HAVE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TIED UP INN EQUIPMENT ... EQUIPMENT WHICH CAN PAY FOR ITSELF IN A SHORT TIME ... BUT ONLY IF ITS AT THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME. IT'S A 15-HOUR DAY.....

....FOR THESE MEN WHEN THE SUN IS OUT ... AND A GRUELLING ONE .. BUT MORE THAN......
....A STRONG BACK AND A SCOOP SHOVEL ARE NEEDED BY MODERN HARVESTERS.

THEY NEED THE MECHANICAL KNOW-HOW TO KEEP THE MACHINES RUNNING.

WHEN THIS ARMY DESCENDS UPON SMALL CROSS-ROAD TOWNS......
....LIKE OKARCHE (CQ), IN CENTRAL OKLAHOMA, ITS LIKE THE OLD OIL BOOM-TOWN DAYS.....

....ALL OVER AGAIN. SEVENTY-FIVE COMBINES AND THEIR CREWS WERE WAITING IN OKARCHE THIS WEEK......
....FOR THE WHEAT TO DRY. TRAILER CITIES SPRANG UP......
....THE CAFES WERE JAMMED WITH HUNGRY HARVESTERS DOWNING FRIED CHICKEN AND STEAK ... THE FAVOURITE MEALS OF HARVEST WORKERS FOR AS LONG AS ANYONE CAN REMEMBER. LIFE IN THE SLEEPY PRAIRIE TOWN SUDDENLY BECAME A 24-HOUR-A-DAY......
....AFFAIR. LINES OF COMBINES AND TRUCKS FILLED THE STREETS AND HIGHWAYS ... GASOLINE WAS SOLD AS QUICKLY AS THE PUMPS COULD POUR IT OUT.

THEN ... AS QUICKLY AS THEY CAME ... THEY WERE GONE AGAIN ... LEAVING LOTS OF EMPTY PLATED AND FULL CASH REGISTERS ....
....A HUMAN AVALANCHE THAT LEAVES IN ITS WARE MILES OF STUBBLE AND HUGE CONCRETE BINS, JAMMED WITH AN ABUNDANCE OF GRAIN THAT'S THE MARVEL OF THE WORLD AND DESPAIR OF THE CONGRESSMEN.
