    Background: BHOPAL AND NEW DELHI,INDIA

Thousands of people left the Indian city of Bhopal on December 12 as scientists and technicians prepared to neutralize the remaining 15 tonnes of poisonous methyl isocyanate at the Union Carbide plant. Despite official assurances that the process would involve no danger, about one-third of the 50,000 people in Bhopal's old quarter headed out of the city. The death toll from the leak of poisonous gas at the pesticides factory is officially estimated at 2,500. People in the area are still dying from the effects of the gas. Four more people died on December 11 and another 60 people were admitted to hospital. But treatment of the sick has been hampered by a junior doctors' strike at the city's main hospital. About 200 walked out on December 11 bringing the treatment of gas victims to a virtual halt. They were angered by an incident in which a member of the city council allegedly assaulted a senior doctor in an argument over the release of one of the gas victims from hospital. As the death toll from the gas leak continues to mount, American lawyers have arrived from the United States to prepare compensation lawsuits against Union Carbide. Meanwhile, hundreds of people marched to the U.S. embassy in New Delhi on December 12, to protest about the gas leak. Among the marchers were several Union Carbide workers and their families.
