  • Description

A BOMB EXPLODED IN THE BASEMENT OF THE YUGOSLAV EMBASSY IN PARIS LAST NIGHT (SUNDAY), KILLING ONE PERSON AND INJURING 14. SOME 250 PEOPLE WERE IN THE BASEMENT - CONVERTED INTO A CLUB FOR YUGOSLAV NATIONALS AND DIPLOMATS - WHEN THE EXPLOSION OCCURRED.

POLICE ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE FOUND PARTS OF A TIMING DEVICE IN THE WRECKAGE, BUT THEY REFUSED TO CONFIRM THIS TODAY. HOWEVER, AN EMBASSY OFFICIAL DENIED REPORTS THAT THE EXPLOSION WAS CAUSED BY A BOMB LEFT ON THE PREMISES.

THE EXPLOSION SMASHED WALLS AND DESTROYED FURNITURE OVER A 120 SQUARE YARD (METRE) AREA, TRAPPING MANY OF THE OCCUPANTS UNDER FLATTENED PARTITIONS AND FALLING CEILINGS. POLICE AND FIREMEN HAD TO ASK PERMISSION TO ENTER THE AREA TO RELEASE THEM, AS THE RESIDENCE IS ON YUGOSLAV TERRITORY. THE DEAD MAN WAS NAMED AS LAZO MITREV, AGED 21, IDENTIFIED AS AN ASPHALT COMPANY WORKER.

THE YUGOSLAV AMBASSADOR, MR. IVO VEJVODA, WAS NOT IN PARIS AT THE TIME OF THE EXPLOSION, AND NO DIPLOMATS ARE THOUGHT TO HAVE BEEN HURT IN THE BLAST. IT WAS THE SECOND BOMB ATTACK THERE IN LESS THAN A YEAR, BUT THE PREVIOUS EXPLOSION, IN NOVEMBER, DID LITTLE DAMAGE.
