The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Dr. Kurt Waldheim, arrived in Syria on Saturday (22 November), on the first leg of a proposed Middle East tour.
The Secretary-General was met at the airport in Damascus, the capital of Syria,by the Syrian Foreign Minister, Mr. Abdel-halim Khaddam.
A spokesman for the United Nations said Dr. Waldheim spoke "at length" with Mr. Khaddam on the "renewal of the United Nations' Forces Mandate on the Golan heights and the whole spectrum of the Middle East situation".
On his arrival Mr. Waldheim said he hoped he would assist in "finding ways and means of making negotiations move again" on the Arab-Israeli conflict.
After speaking with the Syrian Foreign Secretary, Dr. Waldheim conferred with the Palestine Liberation Organisation leader, Yasser Arafat.
The Arafat is due to leave for a visit to the Soviet Union in a few days time.
The Secretary-General was due to meet Mr. Arafat the day after he arrived in Syria but the meeting was brought forward because of Mr. Arafat's impending departure.
