  • Description

Venezuelan Luis Lumumba Estaba, the World Boxing Council's junior flyweight champion, successfully defended his title in Caracas on Saturday (30 October). He met Thailand's Metroi Vorasingh and won a unanimous 15 rounds points decision. It was his 11th successful title defence.

SYNOPSIS: Estaba, in the dark trunks, had considerable height and reach advantage.

Vorasingh at 24, had had nothing like the champion's experience. Estaba, who is said to be nearing 40, if not older, is one of the greats of present day boxing, but the thai, who is not ranked in the world's top 20, showed he was no respecter of reputations. What he lacked in inches he made up for in heart. In the early stages he went after Estaba driving him onto the ropes with a barrage of lefts and rights, but the champion covered up cleverly, and slipped many of the punches. It was an impressive display by the challenger.

As the fight progressed Estaba began to pile up points with a long left lead and crisp hooking, but Vorasingh continued to come forward. He had difficulty getting inside the champion's jab, but he was always working for openings, and in the eighth he again drove him onto the ropes. Trapped in the corner the champion bobbed and weaved, and weathered the storm well, but Vorasingh was still getting through.

Estaba's experience told in the end, however. After 15 rounds the referee and two judges all had him in front.
