  • Description

RAJIV, THE ELDER SON OF THE INDIAN PRIME MINISTER, MRS. INDIRA, GANDHI, YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) EXCHANGED GARLANDS OF ROSES AND JASMINE WITH HIS BRIDE AT THEIR WEDDING CEREMONY IN NEW DELHI.

THE BRIDE WAS SONIA MAINO, 21-YEAR OLD DAUGHTER OF AN ITALIAN BUILDING CONTRACTOR. IT WAS SIMPLE CIVIL CEREMONY BECAUSE RAJIV IS A HINDU AND HIS BRIDE A ROMAN CATHOLIC.

THE COUPLE MET IN ENGLAND IN 1965 WHEN BOTH WERE AT CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY, BUT BECAME ENGAGED ONLY LAST MONTH AFTER STAYING APART TWO YEARS TO SEE WHETHER THEY REALLY LOVED EACH OTHER.

THE INDIAN PRIME MINISTER HELPED HER DAUGHTER-IN-LAW TO CHOOSE HER WEDDING DRESS - A WATER-MELON PINK SARI EDGED WITH GOLD, WITH A GOLD-FRINGED VEIL HALF-COVERING HER FACE.

RAJIV WORE INDIAN-STYLE DRESS OF NATURAL-COLOURED BUTTONED-UP COAT WITH TIGHT WHITE LEGGINGS AND A PALE ORANGE TURBAN.

ALTHOUGH SIMPLE, THE CEREMONY WAS EXTREMELY COLOURFUL BEING DOMINATED BY A PROFUSION OF FLOWERS. THE WEDDING TOOK PLACE AT SUNSET ON THE LAWN OF MRS. GANDHI'S PILLARED BUNGALOW RESIDENCE.

THE BRIDE WORE FLOWER JEWELLERY - MOSTLY JASMINE - WHILE A SCREEN BEHIND WHICH THE COUPLE RETIRED TO SIGN THE MARRIAGE REGISTER WAS ALSO ENTIRELY CONSTRUCTED OF INTERTWINED JASMINE. BEFORE THE CEREMONY WOMEN SPRINKLED THE WAITING GUESTS WITH ROSE WATER AND SERVANTS ON THE ROOF OF THE HOUSE LIT MUSTARD-OIL LAMPS.

ESCORTED BY HER UNCLE, SIGNOR MARIA PREBEDON THE BRIDE CROSSED THE LAWN TO GARLAND HER PROSPECTIVE HUSBAND, AND TO BE GARLANDED IN TURN BY RAJIV.
