  • Description

Judges, witnesses and defendant alike were clapped, booed and cheered during the Jan 24 trial in Baghdad of former Iraqi Minister of the Interior, Sa'ad Qazzaz.

The scene was reminiscent of a variety theatre. Purdah veiled women were conspicuous among the vociferous public. Wildly gesticulating, women and desert garbed men were loudly applauded after impassioned pleas for condemnation.

Accused of ordering force to be used against demonstrators, causing the death of many people, and co-operating with the British against the present Iraqi government, Qazzaz faces a possible death sentence.
