    GENERAL PAUL VANUXEM, 59-YEAR-OLD FORMER DEPUTY COMMANDER OF THE FRENCH FORCES IN GERMANY, WAS CLEARED TODAY (SATURDAY) BY THE STATE SECURITY COURT IN PARIS ON CHARGES OF PLOTTING AGAINST THE STATE.

    THE PROSECUTION HAD ALLEGED THAT VANUXEM WAS "VERDUN" - LEADER OF THE SECRET ARMY ORGANISATION (O.A.S.) FOR THE METROPOLITAN FRANCE.HE IS THE FIRST MAJOR MILITARY FIGURE TO BE ACQUITTED OF CHARGES OF O.A.S.ACTIVITIES.HIS TRIAL LASTED FIVE DAYS.

    IN COURT TO HEAR THE FINAL STAGES OF THE TRIAL WERE THE GENERAL'S WIFE AND DAUGHTER.FILM SHOWS THEM ARRIVING AT THE PALAIS DE JUSTICE, AND LATER SHOWS GENERAL VANUXEM LEAVING SANTE PRISON AFTER HE HAD BEEN RELEASED FROM CUSTODY.

    VANUXEM HAD CONSTANTLY DENIED THE CHARGES, AND CROWDS IN THE COURT APPLAUDED WHEN HIS ACQUITTAL WAS ANNOUNCED.

    TWO PEOPLE TRIED WITH HIM - COLONEL HERVE DE BARBIER DE BLIGNIERES AND MAURICE GINGEMBRE - BOTH RECEIVED PRISON SENTENCES.GINGEMBRE RECEIVED TEN YEARS IMPRISONMENT AND DE BLIGNIERES SIX YEARS.
