SYNOPSIS: Tanzanians have been holding a week of celebrations to mark the 17th anniversary of the Tanganyika African National Union, the country's ruling party. Events have included a university graduation ceremony, a mass rally, and sports meetings. This one, between the Tanzania People's Defence Force and the Tanzania Military Academy, attracted large crowd.
Other attractions included fairground carnivals with special contests and exhibitions....and, apparently, a great time was had by all.
Meanwhile, as the people enjoyed themselves, President Julius Nyerere handed out the degrees to the first graduates of the now-independent University of Dar Es Salaam. He reminded them that they now had a special duty to join the masses, the peasants and the workers.
The celebrations, which began on July the First, ended on Thursday.
