  • Description

The United States Republican party opened its presidential nominating convention on Monday (16 August) with patriotic songs and poetry reading. But the opening celebrations were only a prelude to the tough battle that will take place before the Republicans finally choose their candidate on Wednesday (18 August).

SYNOPSIS: There was all the colourful pageantry on the convention's first day that has become associated with American political activities. But away from the conference hall, the two Republican contestants - Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan - were meeting state delegates in their search for the last few votes that could ensure their presidential nomination. Mr. Reagan and Mr. Ford kept away from the opening day but their families were there. They heard Vice-President Nelson Rockefeller give his support to Gerald Ford.
