ON HIS ARRIVAL GENERAL GOWON ASSURED THE REPORTERS THAT THE WAR IN NIGERIA WAS GOING IN FAVOUR OF THE FEDERAL SIDE DESPITE PESSIMISTIC REPORTS WHICH HAD UNDOUBTEDLY REACHED TOGO. AS FAR AS HE WAS CONCERNED, THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF BIAFRA'S SECESSION WOULD BE THE LAST.

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, HE ADDED, WOULD BE READY TO STUDY ANY NEW PEACE PROPOSALS WHICH MIGHT BE PUT FORWARD BY THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY BECAUSE THEY WERE ALWAYS SEEKING A WAY TO END THE WAR. THEY HAD ACCEPTED THE TERMS OF THE O.A.U.'S LAST PROPOSALS, BUT THESE HAD BEEN REJECTED BY THE OTHER SIDE.
