  • Description

The flying, Irish priest, Father Padraic O'Kelly, 'did it himself' and built a single seater, monoplane. Father O'Kelly's plane received a certificate of airworthiness from the British Ministry of Civil Aviation, Dec 30.

Take-off speed during the test flights was about 65mph. The plane is powered by a modified Volkswagen car engine and took three years and GBP450 to build. The same type of plane, based on a French design, is factory constructed in Britain for about GBP1,000.

Now that his plane has passed the Air Ministry tests, Father O'Kelly plans flips to England, Scotland, Wales and France. He already has 65 hours solo flying to his credit and is a member of the Six County Flying Club.

When he's not tinkering with his silver and red plane the flying priest lectures in Philosophy at St. Mary's Training College, Belfast.
