  • Description

The meeting of the Executive Committee of the International Football Federation (FIFA) held in Dakar, Senegal was opened on Friday (25 April) by the Senegal Prime Minister, Monsieur Abdou Diouf.

Various other FIFA working parties also met in Dakar at the same time -- among them was the World Cup Organisation Commission. They studied proposals for the format of the 1978 World Cup finals, to be held in Argentina and decided to keep the number of finalists to 16. This decision was made despite suggestions involving 20 finalists rather than 16.

But on Tuesday (29 April) FIFA Press Officer Rene Courts said that the decision did not preclude the possibility of increasing the number of finalists in subsequent World Cup finals.

FIFA's Amateur Commission issued a statement on Monday.(28 April) that the amateur status of players chosen for Olympic teams would in future be vatted. This decision was reached because in the past there had been a number of protests that professionals had been included in Olympic teams.

And on Sunday (27 April) the Federation's Technical Committee decided that 80 National Associations of the developing countries would receive aid totalling one million U.S. dollars (about GBP416,000 sterling) to help in matters of administration, coaching, refereeing, medical problems and players: physical preparation.

This aid, to go to countries in Africa, Asia, north and central America and the Caribbean, will come from FIFA's own resources.
