  • Description

JOHN SURTEES OF BRITAIN, DRIVING A FERRARI, WON THE ITALIAN GRAND PRIX YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) OF MONZA. BRUCE MCLAREN (NEW ZEALAND, COOPER) WAS SECOND AND LORENZO BANDINI (ITALY, FERRARI) THIRD.

THE NINE POINTS WHICH SURTEES COLLECTED FROM THIS WIN PUT HIM WITHIN STRIKING DISTANCE OF THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP LEADERS -- GRAHAM HILL (32 POINTS) AND JIM CLARK (30) WHO BOTH RETIRED FROM THE RACE. SURTEES NOW HAS 28 POINTS.

THE RACE COMPLETED A TRIUMPHANT HAT TRICK FOR THE FERRARI STABLE, FOLLOWING SURTEES' VICTORY IN THE GERMAN GRAND PRIX, AND LORENZO BANDINI'S VICTORY IN THE AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX A FORTNIGHT AGO.

FOR 61 OF THE 78 LAPS SURTEES BATTLED IT CUT WITH THE AMERICAN DAN GURNEY, IN A BRABHAM, WITH BARELY MORE THAN TWO OR THESE CAR LENGTHS BETWEEN THEM. BUT ON THE 68TH LAP, GURNEY HAD TO MAKE A PITS STOP AND HE EVENTUALLY FINISHED 10TH. JIM CLARK (LOTUS) WAS IN THIRD PLACE FOR THE EARLY PART OF THE RACE, BUT WAS FORCED TO RETIRE ON THE 28TH LAP. GRAHAM HILL (BRM) WAS LEFT AT THE START WITH A BURNT OUT CLUTCH AND SPENT THE ENTIRE RACE AS A SPECTATOR.

THE NEW JAPANESE HONDA CAR, WHICH HAD BEEN FLOWN IN FROM TOKYO SPECIALLY FOR THE EVENT, DROPPED OUT ON THE 13TH LAP. MORE THAN 100,000 SPECTATORS WATCHED THE RACE OVER A DISTANCE OF 278-MILES (448.2-KMS) -- THE EIGHTH IN THE CURRENT WORLD SERIES. SURTEES' TIME 2 HOURS 10 MINUTES 51.8 SECONDS GAVE HIM AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 127.7 MILES-AN-HOUR (205.63-KMS-PER-HOUR). MCLAREN'S TIME WAS 2 HOURS 11 MINUTES 57.8 SECONDS. LORENZO BANDINI (ONE LAP BEHIND) CLOCKED 2 HOURS 12 MINUTES 9 SECONDS.
