  • Description

Medical delegates from 36 African states are considering ways of improving medical care in the rural areas of the continent, at the 24th session of the African Regional Committee of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The conference in Brazzaville, capital of the People's Republic of the Congo, was opened by the Congo leader President Marien Ngouabi on Wednesday (September 4).

Dr. Alfred Quenum, who was elected to a third five-year term as African Regional Director of the WHO, told delegates it was a good opportunity to consider the injustice of the uneven distribution of clinics and hospitals and how the majority of the people, living in rural areas, had a right to equal medical services.

Dr. Aminu Kano, Nigerian Federal Health Commissioner, paid tribute to all efforts of all those deployed by the United Nations to help the drought victims of West Africa.

For the first time Guinea-Bissau and Namibia (South West Africa) are represented at a session of the regional Committee. They were admitted as member and associate member respectively by the 27th World Health Assembly.
