  • Description

The first public test firing of South Korean rockets was held July 27 at Kojan-dong, near Inchon -- when five different missiles were successfully launched.

President Syngman Rhee was among the crowd of thousands watching the launchings from the top of a hill near the site.

The rockets: 007 (weighing 172 lbs and six-feet in length), 005 and 006, the two-stage 067 and three-stage 566, were on show to the press prior to launching. Afterwards President Rhee toured the control room with National Defence Minister, Kim Jung Yul.

First test firing of Korean-made rockets -- developed by the Aray's Ministry of National Defence Scientific Research Institute - was held last October in secret. The public launching, originally scheduled for April this year was postponed until July 17 -- owing to technical difficulties. A further postponement due to bad weather was made until July 27.

After the firing, Brig.General Chung Nak Eun, Director of the Research Institute, told the Press: "All five rockets, including the two-stage and three-stage rockets, were fired successfully." These rockets, he added, will be developed into larger guided missiles for use against aircraft.
