  • Description

The Tanzanian leader, President Julius Nyerere, arrived in the Nigerian capital, Lagos, on Tuesday (16 November) at the start of a six day official visit.

SYNOPSIS: The Tanzanian leader was welcomed at Lagos Airport by the Nigerian head of state, Lieutenant General Olusegun Obsanjo, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Theophillus Danjuma and other members of the Supreme Military Council which rules Nigeria. President Nyerere's visit has been described as a clear demonstration of a new solidarity among progressive elements in Africa. President Nyerere was accompanied by Foreign Minister Ibrahim Kaduma and Defence Minister Edward Sokoine.

During his visit President Nyerere will have a series of talks with General Obasanjo on several matters, including the current situation in southern Africa. An editorial on the visit published in the newspaper of the ruling Tanu Party of Tanzania said that Nigeria should use its economic power to help the liberation of southern Africa. The Tanzanian leader may be seeking material support from Nigeria for the guerrilla war in Rhodesia. President Nyerere is chairman of the "front-line" states involved in the Rhodesian situation.

On Wednesday (17 November) President Nyerere went to the convocation ceremony at the University of Ibadan, where he was given an honorary doctorate degree. General Obsanjo also attended the ceremony. During his stay, the Tanzanian leader will visit the states of Kano, Gongola and Anambra. He and General Obsanjo will also have talks on bilateral relations between the two countries.

President Nyerere said during his visit that despite political independence, African states were still desperately poor and undeveloped. He said for many Africans political changes had brought no improvement in economic conditions.
