  • Description

About 600 drivers from Portugal's former African colonies surrounded the National Assembly building in their cars in Lisbon on Monday (15 March) demanding licences to work in Portugal.

A spokesman for the drivers, who are refugees from Angola and Mozambique, said many of their Lisbon colleagues had pressured local authorities not to grant them work permits in Portugal.

The spokesman said that during the demonstration officials would be allowed through the blockade of cars but the Prime Minister, Jose Pinheiro de Az???vedo, would be stopped. He said the protesters would demand government action on their situation.

But sources in Lisbon said that with 15 per cent unemployment in Portugal demand for taxi licences is high and the Government appears to be caught in a dilemma. Although anxious to integrate the refugees as fast as possible they do not want to irritate local workers -- especially before elections.

The sources also said that Government reaction to the demonstration was that refugees cannot be given special privileges and will have to wait for licences on the same footing as local Portuguese.
